PARENTAL SUPPORT

YOUR DAILY SUPPORT IS CRUCIAL TO YOUR CHILD'S READING SUCCESS. 

Every day your child will bring home several books to read to you.  TIPS  FOR YOU TO USE:

• Allow the child to look at the pictures.  The child should have an idea about what the book is about before they start to read.  Pictures help facilitate this.
• If your child makes a mistake and does not notice that mistake, ask him /her one of the following questions:

1. Does  that make sense?

2. Does that sound right?

3. Does that look right?

• If your child gets stuck on a word, ask him/her "What can you try that might help?"  If this does not help, tell the child the word.

Your child will also bring home a cut-up story to put together and glue into a special book.  You can help by having the child lay the story out on the table in correct order and read it back to you before he/she glues it into the book.  DON'T DO THIS FOR THEM!  They must develop INDEPENDENCE on this task.

It is very important for your child to become independent with his/her reading and writing as soon as possible, so only give assistance when absolutely necessary.  In the beginning of their program, you may need to provide more assistance, but this should lessen as time goes on.
