1st Grade
            Testing Dates

First grade students at Dunaway Elementary are given the TPRI (Texas Primary Reading Initiative) 3 times a year, in September, January, and May.  They also are tested with a running record to see what reading level they are currently on each Report Card period.

The Observation Survey was designed for First Grade to be used by Reading Recovery teachers, but the regular classroom teachers find that it is very useful for evaluating many of the Reading and Language skills needed in First Grade. We give parts of this test during the year as needed.

It consists of a battery of 6 tests.  They are as follows:

1.  Letter ID - how many letters and sounds can they  recognize
2.  Word Test - list of 20 sight words
3.  Concepts about Print - tests knowledge of books
4.  Writing Vocabulary -
how many words can they write
                                            in 10 minutes

5.  Dictation -
a sentence is read to them-how many
sounds can they hear and record

6. Text Level -
Running Record  of a leveled text
1st grade levels range from 1-16
